Independance Day!

We had a lovely 4th of July! We went to my sister's house and had a picnic in the middle of her raised bed garden. We had steak and chicken and potato salad and grilled bell peppers and corn on the cob and lemonade! It was kind of your typical all-American kind of day.

As all American as.....

denim!

Appropriately to the holiday that we were celebrating, this was the "Creative Sunday's" word.

I, actually, thought to myself, "how American - the blue in the ol' red, white and blue." I thought of all of the lovely associations that I have with denim ~ blue jeans in high school, the denim skirts that I love, cowboys, little boys playing right outside my window in the dirt that will someday be my garden, tough, rugged, cowboys.... denim is as American as apple pie and sock hops and open roads traversing fields full of amber waves of grain under beautiful spacious skies. I mean - think of Levi Strauss jeans, for goodness sakes!!!

Then I looked it up. Denim is a type of tough twill cotton weave that was developed in the late 1600s in France. It's very name comes from the place that it originated -  Nîmes and was originally called serge de Nîmes ('de-nimes'.) Denim has only been in use in America since the late 1700s. (Even the first denim pants were made in Italy.) Oh well! "Leave it to the french," I always say fondly.......

All I can say, now, is just,

look....

See what I mean? This is a photo of an all American boy!!!

An all American boy, who, on the 4th of July, ate corn on the cob, potato salad, drank lemonade and ate berry pie with vanilla ice cream....

.....and, after all of that, went to see some all-American fireworks!

What's that you say? Fireworks were really invented by the Chinese?

Oh, my, what can I say, now.....?

It was very celebratory in a truly mixed American way!

Love,

Katy Noelle

  1. Dearest Katy,

That was a lovely setting for the 4th of July and delicious food. Happy family times and that is the BEST what America has to offer! The red-white and blue actually are the colours of the Dutch flag; the first who colonized the USA... The New Netherlands with New Amsterdam (now New York). I am a proud member of New Netherland Institute http://www.nnp.org/ and also proud of my heritage and new heritage as a proud new American of almost 17 years. For the history, we are a melting pot of many cultures and are one GREAT NATION and very much together as a family on the 4th of July, for our 234th birthday.
Thanks for such a lovely blog and for sharing some of your warm family bond!

    Greetings from Georgia/USA

  5. Fun post, Katy! If it hadn't been for the French, we might not be a nation, so I think it is very appropriate that you shared a French fabric for the Fourth. Lafayette would be pleased, too. :-)

  11. What an upbeat post!
I believe that what makes our two countries so wonderful is our willingness to learn something from everyone who wants to join us, become one of us - whichever side of the border.

  12. I know, Denim was made in France - ironic. But my post celebrates 3 great american aspects to it!

    Very pretty pictures

  17. Katie, thank you so so much for popping over to see my post for Denim and then staying to read more and for your ever so kind and lovely comments which I am so genuinely touched by, especially as you take such lovely photographs.

I had a lot of fun doing the Denim post, although I did feel bad that Denim wasn't actually American, but you guys definitely made it the world wide wardrobe staple it clearly is, and as for Neil Diamond, Will Ferrell & GAP, I cannot get that You Tube clip out of my head!!!

Tomorrow I am posting my tribute to the USA - it is my tribute, so from someone who was born in Scottish who America has had a huge effect on (and I will not be alone). It is my tribute, and I had a lot more I could have added, but felt it was long enough - for part one anyway!!! Hope you can stop by as I hope that for someone who clearly celebrates all that is lovely about America, you enjoy it (although it is a different perspective, maybe artsy, you decide)!

Thank you once again for popping by and I am glad you were taken with my blog. I am sure you will get interrupted tomorrow if you come and view my American tribute.....(I'm nervous!)
