"Hurrah for the pu-umpkin pie!"

Goodbye, November! (although, the way you kept snowing, I kept thinking you were December!)

Maybe, a few of you will remember reading my post on Halloween. We got a foot of snow, a few days before, which panicked my youngest into thinking that we might just possibly skip Halloween, this year. All was well and expectations of candy galore were filled but, the day after ("All Saints' Day" and, better still, Grandma's birthday), when Toby came home from school and we were vacuuming to have her over for a special tea (and because of all the special hub-bub and the snow), Toby exclaimed with strained and excited voice, "is it time for the Christmas tree, now?"

The snow is pretty festive!

(but it melted)

First, however, we had a lovely Thanksgiving. I hope that my friends, here in the US, did, too. It's awfully fun to have a good old fashioned Thanksgiving in New England. Perhaps, I feel closer to the pilgrims' experience. ;) Well, alright, they had it a titch rougher than I do....but, I mean, it just seems very 'right', somehow. =]

Perhaps, 'traditional' is the word for it.

Anyway, speaking of Thanksgivings past and age old traditions, I've often heard stories from my friends who are a generation or so ahead of me - stories of how the pond was always frozen and everyone would go ice skating after dinner, on the day. Well, our pond was frozen over but it was very thin ice. The day before, however, we got a foot of snow (again); so, it turned out to feel rather truly like the typical old fashioned holiday of lore!

The best tradition, of course, is being all together and sharing a special feast to celebrate....

just to celebrate!

...and to set apart time to recognize that we are, indeed, so full with good things (even when there are hard things, too) - and glad about it!

and, then, look how warm and inviting Grandma's house is...

Grandma's house is amazing! The kids are always perfect. Everyone is always happy and has a wonderful time and I have no idea how she so effortlessly spins out that huge dinner. She's very Jeeves-like!

The "Ha-ha" game with too few players (all cousins)....

The only thing I was responsible for was the pumpkin pie! It was a breeze of a day and I was so thankful for that, too! ;)

(although, I'm fully aware that the Christmas Feast is all mine to do and coming!!! ...soon!)

  1. Oh that pie Katy! It looks delish! It looks so 'holiday yummy' over here. I am kind of sad that it's always only the three of us for Christmas (four if you count the cat...haha) but yet I am thankful that my Christmas holidays are so relaxed. Hmmm.... well that is what happens when you live far away from family.

Wishing you a wonderful December sweet girl!

  2. I can't tell you how you made me smile when I came home last week to discover all of your sweet comments you left on my blog. I am sure we would be best of friends if we lived closer. Your pumpkin pie looks amazingly just like ours did. For me, the Thanksgiving feast is all about the pies! We made pumpkin, sweet potato (my favorite) and apple this year. And for my youngest (who doesn't like pie - how can this be?! lol) we always have a cake as well. Thankfully, all of our walks during the Thanksgiving break kept any extra pounds away. :)

  4. Dear Katy,

It's good to hear you had such a happy thanksgiving. I enjoyed seeing the photo's of your family and your mother in laws beautiful house! It looks very inviting with the snow and the lights on inside. A bit like a house from a fairytale.....where the main character of the story arrives, after walking through the snow for hours looking for shelter and some food. He is welcomed by a very sweet lady, who puts him near the fire and serves him the most delicious looking pumpkin pie. Like the one on your photo :-)!

Your boys have grown so much Katy. They look very handsome too. They will attract lots of girls when they get older :-)!

    Wish you a lovely day!

    Lieve groet van Madelief x

  6. Thank you for that beautiful post. :) I can't wait until we get more snow, here, in Lancaster, PA. I'm a snow type of gal. I love the smell, the crisp air, and how you can hear the tinkling of snowflakes as they fall on your jacket.

    God bless,
    Sarah

  7. Grandma's house is so so beautiful and inviting. Like a dream! :) I've celebrated Thanks giving once (in Florida, visiting my cousin there) and I enjoyed it because it was surely about being together and celebrate. Love the pie - both pretty and yummy. Have a wonderful weekend! xo

  11. Dear Katy,

Thank you for your sweet comments on my blog! I read your comment about the berries and touches of red just before I left for the concert in the old people's home and the little church in Schiedam.

The concert in the old people's home was/is always my favourite. The people are genuinely pleased to see you. They sing along, ask questions and sometimes even get touched to tears by the music. I had a lovely conversation with an elderly couple afterwards, who sang in a choir for more than thirty years. They still miss it. I can understand why.

The concert in the little church in Kethel was beautiful too. The church was only half full, but I didn't mind too much, because I had a solo and was nervous enough :-)! Glad to hear you enjoyed your concerts too. Your are right, it is uplifting!

Did you manage to get hold of some red berries in the end? The swamp sounds dangerous.

Wish you a happy new week! Good luck with the Christmas preparations!

    Much love,

    Madelief x

  14. Dear Katy, I simply could not let this year end without sending you thousands of good wishes for you and your lovely family. We've been somewhat "disconnected" this year, what between me going to the country and staying days on end with no internet and you busy with your life, but I do think of you often and whenever I do, I can't help but smile. Thank you for sharing a bit of your world and God bless you! XXXX
